How to Make Cold Foam

French press with glass of coffee with cold foam
With just a few simple ingredients you can make this delicious, creamy/frothy topping perfect for cold brew or iced coffee.
You will need:
  • 1/4 cup of full fat milk (or coconut milk if you are dairy-free)
  • 1 teaspoon of simple syrup (any flavor) OR
  • 1 dash vanilla (either are optional)
  • milk frother or French press
Add the milk and simple syrup (or vanilla extract, if you are using that) to a pitcher or narrow jar.  Fully submerge the milk frother.
Froth until the milk starts to thicken, slowly pulling the wand towards the top of the milk.  Froth about 15-20 seconds total, until the foam is thick and stabilized.

Alternatively, you can use a French press.  Add the milk and simple syrup, if desired to the press and pump the press quickly until the milk thickens and volume increases to double or a bit more.  We prefer this way as it yields a thick microfoam.

Add this creamy foam to the top of your cold brew or iced coffee.

While the best milk texture for lattes is made with whole milk, cold foam is also best made with full-fat milk.
Adding a little bit of cold foam atop your iced coffee or cold brew is just the perfect thing for these last days of summer.
