Decaf, Answered
Decaf, Answered
Most people have questions about decaf they’ve never actually asked out loud. We hear them every week — from first-time switchers, from folks whose doctor just told them to cut back, from lifelong coffee lovers who miss the ritual but not the jitters. So we put the real answers in one place. No myths, no marketing. Just what we know as a roaster who makes nothing but decaf.
CAFFEINE & HEALTH
Is decaf actually caffeine-free?
Not quite — but close. A cup of regular coffee has around 95 mg of caffeine. Decaf has 2 to 15 mg. The Swiss Water Process we use removes 99.9% of it. So it’s not zero, but it’s a fraction of a fraction.
How much caffeine is really in a cup?
Between 2 and 15 mg per 8-ounce cup, depending on the bean and how you brew it. For comparison, a regular cup is about 95 mg — and a square of dark chocolate can carry more caffeine than a cup of our decaf.
Will decaf affect my sleep or anxiety?
For most people, no. The trace amount that’s left is small enough that it doesn’t trigger the racing heart or 3 a.m. wake-ups caffeine can. If you’re highly sensitive, that trace is worth knowing about — but it’s a world away from a regular cup.
Is decaf healthier than regular coffee?
It’s not so much "healthier" as "different." Decaf keeps most of the antioxidants coffee is known for, without the caffeine. For anyone managing anxiety, blood pressure, sleep, acid sensitivity, or pregnancy, that trade is the whole point.
Is decaf safe during pregnancy or for heart conditions?
Generally, yes — it’s one of the main reasons people switch. That said, we’re roasters, not doctors, so talk to your provider about your situation.
FLAVOR & QUALITY
Why does most decaf taste flat or bitter?
Two reasons. Cheap decaf is often made with chemical solvents and roasted very dark to hide the flaws — and then it sits on a shelf for months. Stale, over-roasted, mistreated coffee tastes flat whether it has caffeine or not. Good decaf is a different animal.
Can decaf taste as good as regular coffee?
Yes. We’d stake the whole business on it — we did. Decaffeination is gentler on flavor than it used to be, and when you start with specialty single-origin beans and roast them fresh, the cup speaks for itself.
Does decaf lose flavor faster?
It can be a touch more delicate — which is exactly why freshness matters more, not less. We roast to order so it reaches you at its peak, not after a season on a warehouse shelf.
Why is good decaf so hard to find?
Because most roasters treat decaf as an afterthought — one lonely option next to a dozen caffeinated ones. We flipped that. Decaf is all we do, so it gets all our attention.
Does decaf work well for espresso?
Beautifully. A fresh single-origin decaf pulls a rich, sweet shot — and you can have one at 8 p.m. without paying for it at midnight.
THE DECAFFEINATION PROCESS
How is caffeine removed from coffee?
A few different ways. Some methods use chemical solvents. We only use the Swiss Water Process, which uses water, temperature, and time — no added chemicals — to draw the caffeine out while leaving the flavor behind.
Is the decaf process chemical-free?
Ours is. The Swiss Water Process is 100% chemical-free and removes 99.9% of the caffeine. That’s why we chose it, and it’s the only method we use.
What’s the difference between Swiss Water, sugarcane, CO₂, and solvent decaf?
Swiss Water uses only water and carbon filters. Sugarcane (also called EA) uses a solvent derived from fermented sugarcane. CO₂ uses pressurized carbon dioxide. Traditional methods use chemical solvents. All can make drinkable coffee — we chose Swiss Water for being fully chemical-free and gentle on flavor.
Does the process change the flavor?
A little, honestly — every process does. The goal is to protect as much of the bean’s original character as possible. Done well, with fresh beans, the difference is small enough that most people can’t pick it out.
BREWING & EVERYDAY USE
Do I need to grind or brew decaf differently?
Nope. Same rules as any good coffee: fresh grind, clean equipment, good water. Freshness and grind matter far more than caffeine content.
Can I mix decaf and regular?
Absolutely. Plenty of our customers run a "half-caf" to step down slowly. Your cup, your rules.
Does decaf work in cold brew?
It’s one of our favorite ways to drink it — smooth, low-acid, and you can sip it all afternoon. (We have a cold brew guide — grab it here!)
Is decaf good for lattes and specialty drinks?
Yes. A good decaf holds its own under milk and makes an evening latte something you can actually have in the evening.
LIFESTYLE & IDENTITY
Is it weird to order decaf?
Not even a little. Your nervous system is allowed to have boundaries. More people switch every year — you’re in good company.
Can I still be a coffee lover if I drink decaf?
You already are. Loving coffee was never about the caffeine — it’s the ritual, the flavor, the warm cup in your hands. All of that stays.
SOURCING & QUALITY
Is decaf less "specialty" than regular?
No. We source the same single-origin, traceable, specialty-grade beans you’d want caffeinated — then decaffeinate them. Specialty decaf is very much a thing.
Are decaf beans lower quality?
They don’t have to be. Cheap decaf uses cheap beans — we don’t. Start with great coffee and you get great decaf.
