Is Swiss Water Decaf Safe & Chemical-Free?
If you’ve ever wondered what actually happens to a coffee bean to make it decaf — and whether that process is something you want in your cup — you’re asking the right question. Not all decaf is made the same way. Some methods use chemical solvents. The one we use doesn’t use any. Here’s the straight version.
The short answer
The Swiss Water Process® is chemical-free and safe. It removes 99.9% of the caffeine using nothing but water, temperature, and time — no solvents, no additives. Just science and patience. It’s the only method we use, on every bean we roast.
How it actually works
Here’s the cool part. Green (unroasted) coffee beans are soaked in water. That water pulls out the caffeine — but also the flavor compounds you want to keep. So the process runs that water through a carbon filter sized to catch caffeine molecules while letting the flavor molecules pass through. What’s left is caffeine-free, flavor-rich water. Fresh batches of beans are then soaked in it — and because the water is already full of flavor, only the caffeine leaves the beans. The flavor stays put. (We told you we’d geek out.)
What about the other methods?
You’ll see a few processes out there. Solvent-based methods use chemicals like methylene chloride or ethyl acetate to strip the caffeine. The sugarcane process (also called EA) uses a solvent naturally derived from fermented sugarcane. The CO₂ process uses pressurized carbon dioxide. Most of these are considered safe by regulators, and some make perfectly good coffee. We chose Swiss Water because it’s the only one that’s 100% chemical-free — and because it’s gentle enough to protect the single-origin flavors we work hard to source.
Why it matters for the reason you’re drinking decaf
Most of our customers came to decaf for a reason — pregnancy, heart health, anxiety, sleep, a doctor’s nudge, or simply wanting to enjoy an evening cup. If you’re making a change for your health, it makes sense to know the coffee itself is clean, too. That’s the whole idea: coffee is for everyone, caffeine isn’t — and neither are unnecessary chemicals.
Every coffee we roast is Swiss Water decaf, single-origin, and roasted fresh to order. Browse the current single-origins, or start with the Starter Sampler.
